Strategies for Sensitive Visual Storytelling

Andrea WiseComment

I've worked with Robert Caplin from The Photo Brigade on a few panels now, but this one might be my favorite so far. We got ViewFind and The Photo Brigade to team up and present a special panel about storytelling with empathy and sensitivity, featuring four of ViewFind's finest NYC-based contributors, Ruddy Roye, Michael Santiago, Dorie Hagler and Jonah Markowitz. Yours truly moderated.

Sometimes with these kinds of events, I feel like the conversation stays somewhat shallow in that people shy away from talking about difficult topics so it was quite refreshing that our panelists were willing to speak candidly about the challenges of doing this work and to speak to ways in which our industry needs to step up in order for things to change.

You can read some highlights from the panel on Medium or watch the full recording of the panel below:

How do you tell other people's stories with honesty and sensitivity? And who gets to tell these stories in the first place? ViewFind's Andrea Wise sits down with NYC-based photojournalists Jonah Markowitz, Michael Santiago, Dorie Hagler and Ruddy Roye to discuss how to tell a story with awareness and sensitivity.
